Despite the effects of Covid-19, the total import and export turnover in the first 5 months of 2021 was estimated to remain a growth rate, increasing by 33.5% over the same the period last year.
According to the report and statistics of Ministry of Industry and Trade, due to the impacts of Covid-19, import and export activities in May in 2021 were affected. However, the total export and import turnover of goods in the first 5 months in 2021 remained an increasing rate, up to 33.5% over the same period last year. To be specified, the export turnover of goods reached 130.94 billion USD, increasing by 30.7% and the import turnover of goods reached 131.31 billion USD, increasing by 36.4%.
In the first 5 months of 2021, there were 22 categories of goods which reached the export turnover of above 1 billion USD, acconting for 87.3% of the total (6 categories of goods reached the export turnover of above 5 billion USD, accounting for 63.8%). Phones and electronic components had the largest export value which reached 21.9 billlion USD, accounted for 16.7% of the export turnover and increased by 19.6% over the same period last year; Machines, devices and tools reached 14.9 billion USD, increasing by 74.8%; wood and wooden products reached 6.6 billion USD, increasing by 61.3%, ...
It is seen that there was a significant increase in import activities in the first 5 months of 2021 due to the expansion of manufacturing sector which facilitates the demand of importing input materials and the increasing domestic consumer demand.
Ministry of Industry and Trade predicts that export and import activities will be beneficial due to trade agreements such as CPTPP, EVFTA, UKFTA, ... which allow Vietnamese goods to enter the new markets with appealing tariffs and support import and export.
Last but not least, import and export activities will be affected negatively due the Covid-19 in some regions. As a result, businesses should strengthen their competence to actively adapt and deal with this difficult time.
